‘Uit het hart’ (‘From the heart’) is a collaboration between artists Kera Damo and Femoesa
Kera: The collab between Femoesa and me was there all of a sudden. It was a back and forth, bouncing off spontaneous ideas and actually grabbing these floating ideas. I appreciate so much the synergy that comes from it. When you are both being generous towards each other, it evokes a renewed creativity.
I see Femoesa‘s work multiple times a week, walking through the city. What it does, is that it snaps me out of the mundane. It makes me smile, ’cause it’s about being present in your environment. My thoughts are elsewhere when I walk from A to B and I don’t pay that much attention to the environment. Placing art in these public locations interrupts that. But there is more to it. The artworks are non-intrusive and integrated into the environment. It is not screaming for attention, but giving a gentle nudge for your attention.
After creating a few designs for the fence, the decision was made almost immediately and conclusively. The ultimate design we are looking at shows the interaction of hearts. The bottom hearts interact with the hearts at the top. The chain shows how we are all connected. Placing that on the fence is a way to immediately connect with the passers-by of that fence.
Don’t underestimate the technique used by the artist. Gosh! Making the knots and doing the counting, it was not easy at all. And there was a constant interference with the background that makes you wooshy. My first attempt drawing on a fence was certainly a humbling experience.
